An unfortunate possibility has now become a somber reality for the Versailles volleyball team.

Due to coronavirus issues, the Tigers will be ending their season early and will not be able to participate in the Class 3 District 9 Tournament at Osage next week. Versailles activities director Kyle Middleton made the announcement official Friday morning.

"Due to not enough players being able to play in the district tournament, we will not be playing the district tournament next week at Osage," a statement from the activities director read.

Versailles was scheduled to be the fifth seed in the tournament taking on No. 4 Warsaw on Monday at 6 p.m. Instead, the Wildcats will play top-seeded Eldon on Tuesday in the district semifinals at 5:30 p.m.

Versailles has not played a game since visiting Southern Boone on October 12. During that time, the Tigers were unable to participate in their own tournament on October 17 which was moved to Stover.

Now, the season is officially over and it will go down as a season uncompleted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Versailles football team was scheduled to visit Eldon Friday night and the Tigers had to cancel that game for the same reasons as the school district has moved to online learning until November 5. For the time being, the football and cross country teams are still expecting to participate in district play next week.

At this time, the Lake Sun is not aware of any further cancellations in any sport from any Lake area schools.
