Mizzou lands Ohio State transfer WR Mookie Cooper
Missouri head football coach Eli Drinkwitz has maintained that he's recruiting for the Tigers 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
The early signing period ended over two weeks ago, but Drinkwitz keeps adding talent.
Mookie Cooper, a 5-foot-9 wide receiver from St. Louis who spent this past season at Ohio State before entering the transfer portal, committed to the Tigers on Tuesday. Cooper was a top-100 player nationally in the Class of 2020.
After one year in Columbus, Cooper will head to Columbia with four seasons of eligibility remaining. He entered the transfer portal Dec. 23.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Cooper was the No. 93 prospect in the Class of 2020, the 16th-highest-rated wide receiver and the fourth-best player in Missouri.
He's the second top-10 player from the state's 2020 class now on the Tigers' roster, joining 10th-rated Jay Maclin, per the composite.
Cooper played in one game and did not record a statistic for the Buckeyes this season. Due to NCAA transfer rules, he would still need to apply for a waiver in order to play in 2021 at Missouri.
The NCAA is scheduled to vote later this month on a proposal to allow athletes to transfer once with immediate eligibility. That decision is expected to pass without much pushback.
Ahead of his final season of high school football, Cooper transferred from Trinity Catholic to Pattonville. Cooper was deemed ineligible that fall, however, by the Missouri State High School Activities Association for "transferring for athletic purposes," according to multiple reports at the time.
A scholarship spot directly opened up for Cooper on the Tigers' roster after Damon Hazelton announced on Sunday he won't use an extra year of eligibility and will enter the NFL Draft, ending his time at MU.
Missouri graduate transfer receiver Keke Chism already announced he will return to Columbia for the 2021 season. Redshirt senior receiver Micah Wilson has not announced a decision publicly.
Cooper's commitment continues Drinkwitz's inroads of recruiting the prized St. Louis area.
The Tigers have signed seven players from The Lou as part of their 2021 recruiting class. Missouri also has the verbal commitment of Isaac Thompson, a four-star defensive back from St. Louis in the Class of 2022.
