Two-boat collision results in fatality, multiple additional injured passengers

A two boat collision near the 18-mile marker claimed the life of a 42-year-old woman and left 2 others with serious injuries.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol accident report, the crash occurred just after midnight. The boats were traveling opposite directions. The crash involved a 1995 Sea Ray driven by John D Bennett, 52, of New Haven, MO, that was traveling downstream when it struck the port side of a 2005 Formula driven by Scott M Comia , 42, of O'Fallon, MO, that was traveling upstream. The impact threw one passenger from Comia's boat into the water. The passenger was rescued by the other occupants on the boat. The accident claimed the life of 42- year-old Dawn M Steinkuehler of High Ridge, MO. She was a passenger on Comia's boat. A 13-year-old and 43-year-old Brad W Steinkuehler received serious injuries. Comia and another passenger received minor injuries. There were no injuries listed in the report on Bennett's boat.

Bennett has been charged with BWI with serious physical injury, BWI with death to another, BWI with physical injury and careless and imprudent operation of a vessel. He was sent to Camden County Jail on a 24-hour hold.

This is the second boating fatality on Lake of the Ozarks for 2020.
