Vocalist Dave Baker will be performing at TropRockin’ music festival at the Lake in August but can also been seen at other venues this summer.

When did you get started in music?

I have been singing since I was a child. I grew up in the church and was always involved in the choir. My music experience continued as I entered middle school/high school as I was, once again, heavily involved in the various choirs. I received a football scholarship as well as a vocal performance scholarship at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. Upon graduating I contemplated an attempt to "make it" on Broadway or Nashville but was drawn back to my hometown of Jefferson City. Since my return I have been playing solo acoustic shows, performing with bands and involved in community theatre.

What are you doing today?

I currently have three avenues for my music. I play solo shows which involve just me and an acoustic guitar. I play with a band called.....wait for it....The Dave Baker Band. I also have dipped my toe into the "Trop Rock" world which really allows me to write and play my own original music.

Where do you perform?

I play quite a few places under the various formats. As a solo acoustic act, I play at West Main Pizza in Jefferson City and JB Hooks at the Lake of the Ozarks. Both of those venues have become regular venues where I can be found weekly. Those shows are mellow acoustic shows that I play cover songs and as many requests as I can. The band plays all over the state and even outside of Missouri. We play venues such as H Toad’s at the Lake of the Ozarks, Spectators in Jefferson City and Capital Bluffs Event Center. We also play numerous weddings, many private parties.

As I mentioned before, I have just begun to venture into the “Trop Rock” world. Trop Rock is music that involves the beach, vacation, rum drinks, escapism. It’s a genre full of singer-songwriters and I have loved exploring my creativity in song writing. In the Trop Rock world many performers are able to play house concerts. These can be described as private concerts hosted at someones’ residence. People can purchase tickets, bring a dish and drinks, and enjoy a private concert in a very intimate setting. The performers play their songs and often explain when and why they wrote the song. It’s a pretty cool event. I have had the opportunity to play a couple of these so far and they are a blast.

What type of music do you play?

Not to be cliché BUT I play a little of everything. I have been playing for about 15 years and have amassed a sizable collection of songs. I really try to "read the crowd" and play what people want to hear but sometimes you get lucky and people throw requests my way. Those nights are fun. The band plays a little bit of everything but mainly Country and Rock.

How would you describe your style of music?

I consider myself a vocalist over a musician (meaning I play guitar just well enough to sing over the top of) so I enjoy singing anything that catches the attention of the people in attendance. It is a great feeling when you pick a song and you can look around the room and see numerous people quietly singing to themselves....and sometimes to the other people at their table.
