Lakers take fourth at Arkansas Tournament as Grant Garrett receives Outstanding Wrestler Award
The grapplers of Camdenton found some success in the final event of 2018.
The Lakers made a trip down south across the state line to Springdale, Ark. for the Diamond State Duals in the final weekend of the year and came home with a fourth place finish out of 16 teams after finishing 5-3 in dual competition. Camdenton grapplers took on wrestlers from their own state and Arkansas as well as Oklahoma and were part of an all-Missouri Final Four, which was the first time Missouri teams made up the top four.
While it was a team tournament, there were a few individual highlights from Camdenton along the way.
Sophomore Grant Garrett went a perfect 8-0 on the weekend with seven pins and a forfeit victory as he pinned all but one of his opponents in the first round. Garrett, who improved to 24-2 on the season and is currently the No. 2 state-ranked Class 3 wrestler in his weight class, was voted by coaches as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler amongst a field of over 320 grapplers.
Senior Ryan Rothove also had a productive weekend for the Lakers as he went a perfect 7-0 with five pins to improve his record to 22-3. Among the opponents Rothove took down over the weekend was the defending Arkansas state champion and a wrestler from Excelsior Springs who is currently ranked eighth in the state.
Last but not least, freshman Dakota Davis went 7-1 in his weight class to help the Lakers win a majority of their duals as well.
Camdenton is back in action on Thursday when the Lakers travel to Helias Catholic for a tri-dual with the Crusaders and Bruins of Columbia Rock Bridge.
