After over a week off due to the weather, the Macks Creek Pirates returned to action on Monday in pool play for the Wheatland Tournament. The opponent was the Fordland Eagle and conditions were a little wet, but when everything was finished it was Fordland slipping by the Pirates, 4-3.

Fordland grabbed the initial lead with a single tally in the third inning and maintained the 1-0 advantage until Macks Creek plated two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Eagles quickly responded and took back the lead with three more runs in the sixth and the Pirates could only put together one more run in their half of the sixth.

Macks Creek sophomore Hunter Lane took the tough loss on the hill. He worked the first six-plus innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out eight, hitting one, and walking two. Senior Gage Mashburn worked the seventh and struck out two.

"We had some miscues there in the sixth that proved costly. I thought that Hunter threw well,” Macks Creek skipper Jason Trusty said. “With a young group and new guys at positions, we are going through a bit of learning phase and we are going to have nights like this.”

Offensively, the Pirates were only able to muster three hits on the night and two of those hits came off the bat of Colten Walter. He went two-for-four at the plate and collected two RBIs.

Mashburn doubled once in his three trips to the plate and scored a run. Oscar Cortez reached on a fielder's choice. Justin Register and Tanner Smith each walked once while Cole Register received two free passes. Trever Smith had a sacrifice bunt and Tanner and Cole also scored one run in the contest.

"I thought we did a much better job offensively, although it did take us about four innings to really get things going," commented Trusty.

"I like the fight that I saw tonight when we got down the first time and then again the second time."

Macks Creek drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in pool play. Macks Creek is scheduled to be back in action, weather permitting, on Tuesday against Wheatland at 4 p.m. Tournament play will continue throughout the week before the Pirates visit Weaubleau on Monday at 5 p.m.
