Strong fourth quarter sends Versailles to Clinton Tournament semifinals

Versailles had been trailing most of the night in a first round battle with Odessa in the Clinton Tournament Tuesday night.

The Tigers trailed 43-38 at halftime and 59-51 after the third quarter, but that would all change over the final eight minutes. Versailles put up a 31-point fourth quarter, outscoring Odessa by 10 in the final frame to capture an 84-80 win and advance to the Clinton Tournament semifinals.

A trio of Tigers reached double digits offensively as Coby Williams put up 38 points, Jonathon Geier knocked down 24 and Wyatt Espinosa recorded 14 points while collecting eight rebounds.

Versailles (9-7, 1-2 Tri-County Conference) will take on Columbia Battle in the semifinals on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

Osage comes up short in contest with Fulton

Things got off to a good start for Osage Tuesday night as the Indians welcomed Fulton to town.

Unfortunately for the Indians, they did not end that way as they fell 64-58 to the Hornets.

Osage started off with an 8-2 lead early, but Fulton stormed back with a 12-0 run and went into the locker room at halftime with a 9-point advantage. It was a lead that was nearly taken away, but Osage could not find the solution to get over the hump.

“We cut the lead several times down to two or three (points), but Fulton executed well down the stretch and made their free throws late in the fourth quarter to keep us from having an opportunity to win,” Osage coach Kevin Schnicker said. “I was very proud of how hard our guys played and they never quit throughout the entire game.”

Osage’s Keyton Knamiller led the Indians with 18 points, Zach Wheeler finished with 16, Trey Rassenfoss added eight and Parker Jett contributed six respectively.

“We had some good minutes from guys off the bench and they will be needed more as we head into the Eldon Tournament on Thursday,” Schnicker stated. “We will continue to work to get better in practice today and look forward to the challenges in front of us this week.”

Osage (8-7, 1-0 Tri-County Conference) will take on Christian in the first round of the 87th Annual Eldon Tournament on Thursday at 6 p.m.
