The Internal Revenue Service is set to send out millions of letters this month to people who don’t usually file tax returns, urging them to register to get a payment online if they haven’t received one already.

The letters will be sent to people who didn’t file a return for 2018 or 2019 and have yet to receive checks, which the IRS says appear to be predominantly people with very low incomes.

People can provide information to prove their eligibility at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here.

Many Americans automatically received the payments, which offered up to $1,200 for individuals, but the IRS website says that if a non-filer has yet to receive their check, the agency may not have enough information to determine their eligibility. That could include people in the following groups:

Those receiving Social Security retirement, disability (SSDI), survivor benefits;

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients;

Recipients of Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefits;

Individuals who receive Railroad Retirement (RRB) benefits.

"Millions who don't normally file a tax return have already registered and received a payment," IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a news release. "We are taking this extra step to help Americans who may not know they could be eligible for this payment or don't know how to register for one."

The stimulus checks approved by Congress in March offer up to $1,200 for most individuals and $2,400 for married couples who filed taxes jointly. Recipients were also supposed to receive an additional $500 per child under 17 years old in their household.

Folks can also check the status of their payment with the Get My Payment feature on the IRS website, which is at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment.
