Doris Maxine Ellis passed away quietly on the evening of August 18, 2020. She was two weeks shy of 92. The daughter of James Fiske and Alma Mattie Doll Norman, Maxine was born on a family farm in Amsterdam, Missouri, in 1928. She was one of nine children, and after graduating high school, she followed her older sister to California. There she met her late husband, Irland Keith Ellis, and the two married in 1955. Shortly after, they had their first child.

Keith served in the Navy, and the Ellis family moved often. In the early 1960s, they spent two years in Yokohama, Japan. In 1976, when Keith had retired from the Navy, they bought the 6-acre Lighthouse Marina in Sunrise Beach, Missouri. Her oldest son stayed in California, and Maxine helped run the family business with the help of her daughter and two sons.

Throughout her life, Maxine always sought opportunities to connect with her community. She attended church regularly, generally twice on Sunday, again on Wednesday night, and anytime there was a potluck or fundraiser. She volunteered as a preschool teacher, a bible-school teacher, and a daycare operator. She was a member of the Lady Elks, Lady Lions, and the Newcomers/Longtimers club.

Maxine’s disposition was always naturally sunny. Even during the final years of her life, while suffering dementia and confined to a wheelchair at the Laurie Care Center, she never stopped smiling. She received frequent visits from the church and her family, and when guests inquired about her comfort or happiness, she’d reply that everything was wonderful. She never had a complaint. She kept smiling.

Maxine is preceded in death by her husband. She’s survived by four children; Michael Perkins, Debra Carter, Keith Ellis, and Mark Ellis; one brother, Dennis Norman; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are pending at this time, and memorial contributions are suggested to Westlake Christian Church. Expressions of sympathy may be left online at www.kidwellgarber.com. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Laurie/Sunrise Beach Chapel.
