Construction for the Hurricane Deck Bridge began in 1934 and was completed in 1936. Before the bridge was built, cars were moved across the lake by ferry. Early on it was a toll bridge.  Looking back, take note of the prices to cross the bridge: forty cents for car and driver, five cents for each additional passenger; cars towing trailers sixty cents plus a nickel for each additional passenger. A ten cent discount was given for buying a round trip toll.
