Lake Area Helping Hands Homeless Shelter has been operating since 1993. It is the only active homeless shelter in 4 counties; Miller, Morgan, Laclede and Camden. Lake Area Helping Hands Homeless Shelter is a unique program which serves people in need in numerous ways including; assistance in preparing for and finding jobs, medical services and counseling referrals, financial management (including banking 75% of the clients income for future housing), food pantry and more. The people they serve agree to a 90 day commitment/probation period to work together to improve their lives.
In 2018, Lake Area Helping Hands Homeless Shelter provided 6,700 individual bed/nights for 747 people. In spite of the improved economy, the number of people in need of their assistance, particularly children and Veterans, has continued to increase. (9 children housed at the Shelter during Christmas)
Lake Area Helping Hands Homeless Shelter revenue is 100% dependent on donations. No State, local or Federal funds are provided. Basic operational expenses cost a minimum $50,000 annually ($4166/mo). Expanding services, including additional outreach, would require additional funding. Community, church and corporate donations have significantly decreased in the last year resulting in Lake Area Helping Hands Shelter struggling just to keep the doors open. Financial donations, basic needs donations (toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, hand soap, laundry soap, etc.), and volunteers would all be most welcome to Lake Area Helping Hands Homeless Shelter. Located in Camdenton, the Shelter Manager is Patricia Wieter and she can be reached at 573-836-4968. Unity at the Lake Church wants to encourage other churches, organizations and individuals to support this very worthwhile group.
