A man who was swept away after attempting to cross a bridge during a rainstorm has been charged with careless and imprudent driving and driving while intoxicated.

Lawrence Mitchell, 41 of Eldon, was released with a summons, according to an online arrest report posted by the Missouri Highway Patrol. Mitchell was involved in an incident on Tuesday evening after his car was swept off the Catrock Bridge off Highway 54 in Meads Flats. Mitchell was able to make it to safety. A passenger in the vehicle was swept down the creek about 3/4 of a mile but managed to grab on to a tree. She was rescued by the Lake Ozark Fire Protection District, along with 8 other agencies, who were working the incident. The woman was found clinging to the tree where Mitchell had reported seeing her. She was taken to Lake Regional Hospital.

Mitchell had managed to walk across a field and found a tow truck driver responding to call who called 911. The incident was reported shortly before midnight on Tuesday.
