“The teachers were dropping hints that they wanted a student-written play this year,” Madison said.

The Camden Area Homeschoolers’ Drama Troupe will be performing an original play called “Once Upon a…CUT!” this week.

The play was written by two actresses in the play, sisters Madison, 18, and Megan, 16, Botta. “The teachers were dropping hints that they wanted a student-written play this year,” Madison said. “We started writing in October. I love to write and she [Megan] was my coach. I would run out of inspiration and say, ‘Well I’ll do it later.’ And she would say, ‘No, Maddy, we have to work on it or it’s not going to get done.’ And when our work schedules got pretty crazy, we would work on it scene by scene. Megan would write a scene and then I would write one so we could get it done because it was getting close to our deadline.”

Megan and Madison both said they enjoyed working together. “All in all, I wouldn’t have wanted to write it with anybody else. It was a really cool experience,” Megan said. “It was cool to see how some characters came more naturally for her that she would be able to take and write with a lot better and some characters came more naturally to me. That was really neat to see.”

The sisters said they combined two genres into one story. “We wanted to incorporate fairy tales, but we wanted it to be a comedy and something quirky that we could use with a movie set kind of thing,” Madison said. “Once Upon a…CUT!” tells the story of a director trying to make it to the top. He decides to put his own twist on an old fairy tale.

“Once Upon a…CUT!” will be Thursday and Friday, May 2-3 at the Camdenton Little Theater. The performance starts at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $6 per person or $30 per immediate family.
