In December Jim Long, a member of the Lake of the Ozarks Woodcarvers Club, taught an intaglio-style carving seminar at the senior citizens center in Laurie. Jim lives in Osage Beach and teaches here and in Mission, Texas. In intaglio style of re- lief carving the carver recesses the carving into the wood in- stead of making the carving stand out. Jim had the word “JOY” cut out of basswood, ready for the students to start carving. The students carved a snowman, an- gel, or Santa into the “O” of the sign and then added holly and berries into the sign. The result was a pretty, decorative “JOY” sign as seen in the picture of the instructor’s finished carving which his wife, Ann, painted Jim says that he really enjoys teaching and especially the banter that goes on in the class. Jim also carves characters – hillbillies and especially Santa’s.
