Donald Edward Smith, 89, of Leavenworth, died, Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at St. John Hospital.
He was born June 11, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Elmer and Olive Mae (Harwood) Smith.
On July 17, 1951, Donald married Mazilla B. Bullock. She survives at the home. He also leaves behind his son, Elmer Michael Smith and his significant other, Corliss Fox.; a granddaughter, Heather and her husband, Chris Acker; one great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1968 and was in the Korean war where he received the Purple Heart Award.
He then worked at Cushing Memorial Hospital in the Engineering Dept. until he subsequently retired in 1983.
He and his wife moved to Fort Monroe, Va., where his wife worked for the U.S. Army as a civil service employee until her retirement in 1988.
They then moved back to Leavenworth, Kan.
Donald was a lifelong member of VFW Post 0624, in Leavenworth, Kan.
He was also a member of the American Legion in Sunrise Beach, Mo., Temperance Lodge #438 AF&AM in Smithville Mo., Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Memphis Tenn., Elks Osage Community Lodge #2705 in Laurie, Mo., Moslah Shriners AAONMS of Fort Worth, Texas, and the International King Midget Car Club.
He and his wife enjoyed their second home at the lake of the Ozarks.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m.
Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project or Osage Community Lodge #2705.
