An young man from Iowa has passed away from complications of serious injuries from a boating collision on Lake of the Ozarks earlier this summer.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has updated the incident report to reflect the death of Alec J. Potthoff of Van Meter, Iowa at 1:20 p.m. August 21, 2018 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. The 20-year-old was a passenger in a Formula that collided with a Baja at the 0.3 mile marker of the main channel of the lake on the night of May 26, 2018. The crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in Miller County.

Potthoff had been flown in the immediate aftermath to University Hospital. 

Timothy E. Cox, 50, of Adel, Iowa was the driver of the Formula Potthoff was in. Cletus A. Barsch, 41, of St. Joseph, Missouri was the driver of the Baja. 

According to the crash report, the Baja was heading downstream when it encountered the Formula, heading upstream. The Formula turned to the left to avoid collision but the Baja turned to the right, striking the bow of the Formula. 

Barsch and Cox were uninjured. In the Formula, Holly A. Peterson, 20, of West Des Moines and Emma R. Graen, 20, of Waukee, Iowa received minor injuries. Kallie A. Barsch, 14, of St. Joseph was a passenger in the Baja and also received minor injuries. 

Cletus Barsch was arrested by a state trooper on May 26 for boating while intoxicated - alcohol - serious physical injury and failure to exercise the highest degree of care of a watercraft. However charges were not filed or were dropped as there is no case pending at this time.

The collision occurred over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.
