A Versailles man was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Morgan County Saturday evening. The driver in the crash was subsequently arrested by a state trooper to possibly face multiple charges.

James R. Dinkins, 26, was a passenger in a 1996 Chevrolet 2500 being driven by Donald R. Kemper, 24, of Jefferson City, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

Dinkins was taken by a Staff for Life helicopter to University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 6:35 p.m. June 23, 2018, according to the crash report.

The crash occurred around 5:43 p.m. on Ritchie Road, 0.7 mile east of Route T, southwest of Versailles.

The crash report stated the pickup lost traction while negotiating a curve. Kemper reportedly overcorrected and the pickup went off the left side of the roadway where it struck a fence and a tree before coming to a rest. 

Kemper received injuries described as minor and refused treatment at the scene.

Kemper was arrested at 6:07 p.m. for driving while intoxicated - alcohol - death of another; careless and imprudent driving involving an accident and no seatbelt. He was taken to the Morgan County jail on a 24-hour hold, according to the MSHP arrest report.

Dinkins’ death was MSHP Troop F region’s fourth fatality in June and its 26th in 2018.

The crash report indicated Kemper was not wearing a seatbelt, but it could not be determined whether Dinkins was wearing a seatbelt or not.
