An ALDI discount supermarket is coming to Eagles Landing in Lake Ozark.

The ALDI chain has more than 10,000 stores in 20 countries worldwide. The company has been in the process of remodeling 1,200 stores in the United States and has announced plans to open 400 new locations including one at Lake of the Ozarks. There are expected to be as many as 2,500 ALDI markets across the U.S. by 2022, which would make it this country’s third largest grocery chain.

Eagles Landing spokesman Andy Prewitt says his organization is excited about bringing such a well-known and widely popular supermarket to the lake area. “We have worked on this for a long time and are extremely happy to be able to make this announcement,” Prewitt said. “ALDI is a favorite of value shoppers across the country.”

The specifics of construction and other matters are currently being finalized with the city of Lake Ozark.

The German brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht founded the ALDI chain in 1946 when they took over their mother’s store in Essen. That store had been in operation since 1913. The Albrecht family also owns the popular Trader Joe’s chain.

The first stores opened in Eagles Landing in 2012 and include Menard’s, Kohl’s and CVS pharmacy. A multiplex theater and Buffalo Wild Wings are also located in the shopping center.
