Dr. Ragsdell is the first surgeon in Jefferson City to offer reverse total shoulder replacement for patients with significant rotator cuff problems.
Jefferson City Medical Group is pleased to welcome a new orthopedic surgeon who brings an advanced surgical technique for shoulders to Jefferson City.
Matthew Ragsdell, D.O., joined JCMG Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine on January 2. Dr. Ragsdell is board certified in orthopedic surgery, has expertise in total joint replacement and is fellowship-trained in sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction.
Dr. Ragsdell received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan and his sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital.
Dr. Ragsdell is the first surgeon in Jefferson City to offer reverse total shoulder replacement for patients with significant rotator cuff problems. In a traditional shoulder replacement, the replacement device mimics the normal anatomy of the shoulder, which still requires the rotator cuff muscles for normal movement. In a reverse total shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are switched, and the shoulder then relies on a different muscle, the deltoid instead of the rotator cuff, to power the arm.
“Difficult shoulder problems affect a patient’s life, often keeping a patient from even sleeping comfortably,” says Ragsdell. “My goal is to work together with patients to get their pain relieved and their life back in motion.”
Dr. Ragsdell formerly practiced in Rolla and in the state of Florida. Dr. Ragsdell is a native of Missouri and was a star football player at Hickman High School and Evangel University. He and his wife, Cassie, reside in Jefferson City.
