"People bid against themselves, bumped their own bids, and bid on Kids’ Harbor signs they couldn’t take home just to make a donation to support children in our community. It was truly moving,” said Cara Gerdiman, Kids’ Harbor’s Executive Director.
On Saturday, December 9, 2017, the community turned out in full force to own a piece of the historic Black Bear Lodge Restaurant at Tan-Tar-A Resort. Tan-Tar-A Resort arranged for the auction of the decorations, furniture, and equipment with the proceeds of the sale being donated to Kids’ Harbor. Bryant Auction managed the auction.
“It was an amazing thing to see. People bid against themselves, bumped their own bids, and bid on Kids’ Harbor signs they couldn’t take home just to make a donation to support children in our community. It was truly moving,” said Cara Gerdiman, Kids’ Harbor’s Executive Director. “We are so thankful to Tan-Tar-A for providing us with this opportunity.”
“It was bittersweet for us to watch. The Black Bear Lodge Restaurant had been a part of Tan-Tar-A for over twenty five years. There is a lot of history within those walls, and our customers had a lot of good experiences,” said Fred Dehner, Tan-Tar-A General Manager. “Moving forward, we eagerly anticipate the new restaurants coming to Tan-Tar-A Resort, and are excited to share the new concepts with the Lake of the Ozarks community.”
Kids’ Harbor is a non-profit child advocacy center serving Lake of the Ozarks, Fort Leonard Wood and surrounding areas. Their mission is to provide coordinated response, healing and prevention of child abuse.
The organization assists victims of child abuse and their non-offending family members as they make their way through the difficult and often frightening process of a child abuse investigation. The agency’s funding comes through grants, fundraisers, and donations.
In 2017, Kids’ Harbor has received over 663 child abuse referrals to their two centers located in Osage Beach and St. Robert. This number represents a 16% increase in children referred over the same time period in 2016. The money raised from this auction will be utilized to provide forensic interviews, medical exams, counseling,, and advocacy to children referred to Kids’ Harbor.
“We are honored to be apart of this historic auction! Tan-Tar-A has been a significant part of the draw to the Lake of the Ozarks for decades. To assist them in anyway in growth is our pleasure,” said Rick Bryant. “For the resort to decide to give profits from the auction to charity exemplifies those that live at the Lake.
Giving to Kids Harbor is not only kind, it makes great sense in a community to protect and represent our youth for our future! We’re proud of the Lake-we love the Lake!”
“Kids’ Harbor wishes to thank the many community members who came to the auction, purchased items, helped spread the word, and provided support. This donation comes at a time when Kids’ Harbor is facing the potential loss of a $14,000 grant that may no longer be available because of a change in the grantors funding strategy,” said Gerdiman. “Thank you to everyone who made this auction such a success, especially Tan-Tar-A Resort and Bryant Auction.”
