A serious multiple injury boat crash on Labor Day has turned into a fatality accident with the later death of one of the injured passengers.

Stephanie L. Knecht, 37, of Paola, Kan. passed away at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Research Medical Center following a boat crash in the upper reaches of the Lake of the Ozarks on Sept. 7. Knecht was flown to the Kansas City hospital by air ambulance for treatment of serious injuries that occurred when the boat she was riding in ran aground and struck a tree near the 85 mile marker in Benton County.

The grounding occurred around 12:30 a.m., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol incident report.

Knecht’s death was Highway Patrol Troop A’s 31st fatality. It was their 31st fatal accident of the year.

Three other passengers in the boat received serious injuries in the crash, including Jonelle M. Frederico, 41, of Grain Valley, Joseph E. Knecht, 37, Paola, Kan. and Andrew T. Wachtel, 35, of Kansas City. All were transported by air ambulance to University Hospital for treatment.

Boat driver Ryan T. Johnson, 41, of Paola, Kan. was uninjured in the crash.

Immediately following the accident, the Patrol had charged Johnson with Boating While Intoxicated and Negligent Operation of a Watercraft.
