Christmas came early this year. Instead of waiting until Dec. 25, the infamous Santa that has been spotted ploughing the waters of Lake of the Ozarks on his personal watercraft for the last 10 years is ready to make his rounds during the July Fourth holiday to visit with as many kids and adults as possible.
It’s become a tradition for Richard Luelf, of Lake Ozark and Kentucky, to cruise the lake in mid-summer dressed as Santa Claus, reminding kids and adults alike that the jolly old elf is alive and well and keeping an eye of who’s being good.
This year Luelf figures he will visit about 150 kids and adults over the weekend.
The July 4th holiday is expected to bring record numbers of boaters, sailors and anglers to the water. Along with hot dogs and apple pie, alcohol will be on hand for many on this national day of celebration. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) has three tips that can help ensure it’s also a safe holiday for everyone aboard.
Roger Corbin: Bridge used most by westsiders
With a petition in Camden County Circuit Court to form a Transportation Development District (TDD) for the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge, a proposal to offer an electronic discount pass to frequent users of the toll bridge has been made by Sunrise Beach resident Roger Corbin.
“I believe most trips across the bridge are made by westsiders,” he said. “Based on the survey we did along the Route 5 corridor in Sunrise Beach (for a Community Development Block Grant), the low and moderate income index on the west side is extremely high. Raising the tolls would adversely affect a lot of people here.”
Meeting set for July 6
The Sunrise Beach planning commission will be holding a meeting Tuesday, July 6 at which the public will be invited to comment on and ask questions about the Transportation Development District being proposed for the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District Headquarters behind Station 1 on Porters Mills Spring Road off Route 5.
