The boys and girls from Climax Springs traveled to Macks Creek to renew the Tri-Lakes Conference rivalry on Tuesday.
BOYS
The boys at Climax finally found some retribution on Tuesday, going into Macks Creek and winning 62-36, after going 0-4 against the Pirates last season.
Trailing 3-1 early in the first quarter, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run, taking control of the game. The Pirates battled back however, and trailed 13-8 after the first period.
But that moderate lead got stretched a little more in the second quarter as Climax Springs took a 10 point lead into the half.
One of the big differences is the addition of junior Dillion Danforth for Climax Springs. His size, athleticism and quick release made him a tough matchup, as he led all scorers with 21 points.
He wasn’t alone though. Ethan Newell scored 15, Michael Buerge scored 10 and Ethan Baxter added 9.
For Macks Creek, Dylan Whitworth scored 12 points, but foul trouble and a host of double teams kept him from taking advantage of the smaller Cougar lineup.
Curtis Collins added 8, while Zack Jordan scored 7.
GIRLS
In a game that featured short scoring runs back-and-forth, the Climax Springs Lady Cougars found they had longer runs, and more of them, in a 51-41 win at Macks Creek on Tuesday night.
Trailing by 8 at one point in the third quarter, the Lady Pirates fought back to close the gap to 32-30.
But Climax Springs responded and slowly pulled away, thanks in large part to the free throw shooting of point guard Wendy Leas.
The Pirates were able to hold Leas to just 2-14 shooting from the field, but both her field goals were 3-pointers, and she knocked down 8-10 free throws.
She also got the rest of her team involved with 6 assists.
Laryssa Maasen and Jessica Parker were often on the receiving end, and all three Cougars scored 14 to lead the team.
Macks Creek had three players around double figures as well, with Allisyn Carnahan leading all scorers with 15. Braden Charlton added 11, while Krissa Willis scored 9.
