Camdenton's girls soccer team played solid defense and used timely goals to defeat Waynesville 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Lady Lakers' coach J.D. Hunter assembled a patchwork formation after losing junior sweeper Kali Kuse to an injury. Hunter elected to slide senior Chelsey VanHook from her normal spot at center back to anchor the Camdenton defense against Waynesville's counterattacking offense led by speedy forwards Jesslyn Clark and Loriann Clark.
"We had a great scouting report, we knew about (Jesslyn Clark) and we knew about (Loriann Clark), and I thought we did a nice job. We had a brand new sweeper, never played the position, out there with Chelsey VanHook. We picked her because she is so smart, now she needs to talk a little more," Hunter said.
Waynesville did not have a shot on goal until the 39th minute of the match. Camdenton struck early with a goal in the sixth minute.
Junior striker Ashleigh Paschel settled the ball just outside the Waynesville penalty area and drove a low shot to the far post from 19 yards out to put Camdenton up 1-0.
"Ashleigh Paschel is really starting to play that target spot so much better, playing with her back to the (opposing) goal, making the right decision, she had some nice moves and just did some great things," Hunter said.
Waynesville's defense stepped up after Paschel's goal. Senior Tigers goalkeeper Alicia Cooke kept her team in the hunt with six saves. Waynesville launched several dangerous counterattacks in the second half and forced Camdenton keeper Sandra Shore to make four saves. The Tigers' best chance to tie the game came in the 53rd minute when a misplayed ball sent Shore scrambling for a save.
"They sure threw everything at us, they did a great job. I've know coach Mike Gow forever and he is just a wonderful coach and they sure fought, competed, and played well," Hunter said.
Camdenton picked up its offense in the final ten minutes. The Lady Lakers took three shots on goal in a two-minute span. The third shot ended up in the back of the net on a brilliant strike by freshman Miriam Taylor from just inside the 18-yard line.
Hunter says he was glad to have the insurance goal and was happy to get out of the game with a win.
"We didn't play as well as I thought we should have, but we played well enough to win," Hunter said.
Camdenton improves to 4-3 on the year. Shore picked up her fourth shutout of the season and dropped her goals-against average to .428 goals per game.
