Camdenton's girls soccer team will have to wait for Mother Nature to cooperate before it goes for back-to-back-to-back Lady Laker Invitational tournament titles. The 2010 final between Camdenton and Southern Boone was postponed as thunderstorms played havoc with Saturday's schedule.

Camdenton cruised past Boonville in Friday's tournament opener and defeated Mexico 2-1 in a soggy semifinal on Saturday. The touch-and-go second half served as a rematch of 2008's Lady Laker Inviational final.

"Mexico, we know how they defend. I like their three in the back, they are a solid team," Camdenton coach J.D. Hunter said.

The Bulldogs defense held Camdenton scoreless despite the Lady Lakers’ five-shots-on goal-to-none advantage at the half. Hunter encouraged more aggressive shots to his players in the second 40 minutes.

"We talked at halftime about being patient, find feet, serve it up. As the field start to deteriorate just keep plugging shots, plugging shots, and let’s get one on a counter, and it just worked out," Hunter said.

As rains intensified and the grass became slick, the Lady Lakers midfield created better chances for forwards Miriam Taylor and Ashleigh Paschel. Camdenton introduced a rotating triangle in the central midfield.

"We are really happy with Haley Baker, Chelsey VanHook, and Chelsi Libby in the middle rotate with a three-headed dragon type look. Haley Baker is starting to be a bigger influence on the center mids and she wins a lot of 50/50 balls. She knows where to go with her next touch, so we're really happy with that," Hunter said.

Libby sparked Camdenton's first goal in the 56th minute. Libby's pass to the left wing set up sophomore Abbey Herfurth for a cross from the left wing. Herfurth played a beautiful centering pass to Taylor, who deflected the ball into the net for a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Lakers scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a hustling play in the 72nd minute of the match. Senior midfielder Jessica Smith fired a shot from the right side to the near post that went through the hands of Mexico goalkeeper Brittany Griffin and found the goal.

"When it is this wet, you just have to keep plugging shots because you never know what's gong to happen," Hunter said.

Mexico capitalized on the wet conditions to score its goal with four minutes left in the match. Bulldogs' senior LeAnn Robley lofted a high arching shot toward the Camdenton goal that Lakers' goalkeeper Sandra Shore could not find a handle on.

The tournament final between Camdenton and Southern Boone was postponed as weather continued to deteriorate. The match will be made up on May 10, at 4:30 p.m. with the tournament title on the line.

The Lady Lakers are scheduled to return to action Monday at Branson.
