The Camdenton High School boys' soccer team had the best season in program history in 2009, beating Rolla for the first time which also gave the Lakers their first district title.
As a senior this season, Nick Huey doesn't want to settle for anything less. He's ready for another – and better – postseason run in his final stint as a Laker.
"It's something that (had) never been done before, so everyone wants to top that as best we can," Huey said after practice last week.
With the start of the 2010 season looming next week, conditioning was the primary focus of the first week of practice last week.
"Coach (Jason) Ingold's pushing us really hard, I think he wants us more in shape this year than we've ever been," Huey said.
Ingold said fitness will indeed be key early on, as the Lakers don't yet have the depth they had in 2009. Much of the Lakers bench will be young and lacking varsity experience.
"Last year we could bring in 6 or 7 or guys off the bench," Ingold said. "We'll need some of our top guys (this year) to last longer."
The team's initial conditioning level was good.
"A lot of the guys came in in decent shape, all around," Ingold said. "Soccer, you have to be able to do bursts... not just run long distances."
The Lakers must replace a strong 2009 senior group that included Ozark Conference Player of the Year Jeff Dorhauer, Travis Miller, Connor Agniel, Nate Buttram and goalie Ryan Moriearty.
Senior Matt Norris will get the first crack at replacing Moriearty in goal, Ingold said.
"We've kind of been training (Norris) for three years for this year," Ingold said, adding that senior Jeron Sinclair is another potential candidate for the position.
Ingold said senior Mark Buscher could be ready for a breakout season.
"He played in every game last year, but didn't start any of them," Ingold said. "He's gotten better and better and this year, I expect him to have a really solid season. He played great this summer in all the stuff we did, and came in in great shape with a great attitude."
Camdenton went undefeated (9-0) in the Ozark Conference last season, ultimately losing to Columbia Hickman in sectionals. But league and district championships have given returning players a confidence boost.
"It let us know that we can play and beat good teams," senior Caulin Atkins said.
Among regular season action, Atkins and Huey said the team was eager to face Jefferson City Helias, a team the Lakers have never beaten, as well as a rematch with Hickman.
