The Boonville Pirates quickly made it apparent that Osage would not be cruising to another blowout victory in Monday night's Class 3 sectional contest.
Osage trailed for the first time since Sept. 23, and also appeared to be on the wrong end of a momentum-swinging special teams play in the third quarter. It was one of the few times this season that the Indians had faced adversity.
But Osage refused to falter, instead reclaiming control by using its best asset: veteran playmakers.
Osage got long touchdown catches by seniors Jared Edwards and Kyle Jones to pull away from Boonville for a 38-20 victory at Athletic Stadium.
"I feel proud for our kids and our school," Osage coach Dan Henderson said. "I thought our kids came out in the second half and just battled their (butts) off. That's a great football team they beat."
The Indians move on to Saturday's quarterfinal round for a contest at North Callaway, which beat Southern Boone 24-0 on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
"I don't even know what I'm feeling right now," said Osage senior linebacker Christian Williams. "It's great for our team and school. We haven't been this far (in the playoffs) in a while."
Osage's offense started clicking in the third quarter following a tight first half. On the Indians' second possession of the period, sophomore QB Bo Dean threw a quick screen to Jared Edwards in the left flat.
Edwards found room up the sideline and beat the Boonville defense for a 50-yard score and a 17-7 Osage lead.
Disaster struck on Osage's next possession.
On 4th and long, Boonville blocked an Indians punt attempt and recovered at the Osage 1 yard-line. Wes Davis scored on the next play to get the Pirates within 17-14 at the 2:29 mark.
Jones, quiet for most of the game, answered for Osage with the play of the night.
On 3rd and 5, Dean rolled out to the right then heaved a jumpball down the middle of the field to Jones.
Leaping in the air against 6-foot-5 Boonville defender Holden Hinkle, the 6-foot-5 Jones came down with the reception. Jones turned around after making the catch and beat Hinkle in a foot race to the endzone.
"We've got kids that make plays," Henderson said.
Williams would recover a Davis fumble early in the fourth quarter to set Osage up inside the Boonville 15.

The Indians would capitalize on the short field and score on a 5-yard run from Dean to make it 31-14.
"They're stingy defensively and to hang 38 on them, that's a pretty good night," Henderson said of Boonville.
Davis' 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter put Boonville ahead 7-0. Until then, Osage hadn't trailed since falling behind 8-7 at Eldon in an eventual 48-8 win in Week 5.
