With winter finally upon us, many outdoor enthusiasts are wondering what in the world they are going to do now that most of the hunting seasons are over. Well, luckily for all of us who enjoy the great outdoors, we live in Missouri! As we all know, weather in Missouri can change drastically from day to day. We have witnessed that already this winter. With highs reaching the 50’s on multiple occasions already, I encourage you to get out and enjoy nature in your area.

Wintertime in Missouri offers one of the most picturesque landscapes in the nation. There are many different activities you can enjoy, as long as you can brave the somewhat frigid temperatures. One of my favorite winter pastimes is going out and photographing Missouri’s winter beauty. No matter what your skill level, with a camera in hand you are sure to capture at least a few breathtaking images. I particularly like to focus on streams and creeks in the wintertime. You can often be surprised by the abundance of wildlife surrounding a semi-frozen creek. Another favorite of mine is capturing a magnificent sunset just as a cold Missouri day comes to an end over the leafless forests across the state.

Even if you don’t have land of your own that you can take a walk through to capture a few good photos, there are still many places you can access to do some picture taking. Some of the most amazing wintertime photos can be taken by doing a little “freestyling.”

I like to just drive some backroads until I come across something that catches my eye. However, you must always be aware of property lines and make sure not to trespass. A nice photo isn’t worth the trouble of receiving a scolding from a landowner! You can avoid trespass all together by visiting a Conservation Area near your home. The Missouri Department of Conservation owns and maintains thousands and thousands of acres across the state for people like you and me to enjoy.

I encourage you to get out this winter and try your hand at photography. You don’t have to be an expert to capture an image that will forever stay in your memory. You can visit www.mdc.mo.gov for a listing of Conservation Areas in your county, or you can contact your local Conservation Agent and ask about opportunities to view Missouri’s winter wonderland.
