Fishermen — or women — cast your reels. March 1 is almost here, and with that comes trout fishing season.
This annual, eight-month gathering brings together outdoor enthusiasts and trout lovers for the first whistle, where anglers can cast off and get to work bringing in the best catch of the day.
Such is a popular event for Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon. Anglers are up and ready by first light to find their spot and cast off.
A mix of veteran fishermen and newbies will mingle Monday, which Missouri Department of Natural Resources expects a good turnout from those taking a three-day weekend. About 8,000 trout tags will be sold at Bennett Spring, Roaring River State Park and Montauk State Park on opening day.
All three state parks have seen new structures or recent improvements to their facilities.
Many of the rooms at the motel at Bennett Spring have been remodeled, and several cabins have been repaired.
Montauk State Park opened a new fish cleaning station in the park, and Roaring River boasts a new 5,169 store for tag and license purchasing, as well as fishing equipment and other supplies.
