Versailles senior Taylor Dobbins is not ready to hang up his cleats just yet.

Dobbins was recently chosen to play and represent the Tigers in the 2018 MHSBCA (Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association) Senior All-Star Series on June 9 in Ozark, Mo. The series will feature four games consisting of some of the best senior players from each of the five classes in Missouri and Dobbins was pretty excited to learn he would be among them when he received a letter in the mail.

“I was kind of shocked, but grateful Coach (Jason) Ollison let me know about it and put me up for it. Representing Versailles one last time is just a great feeling,” said Dobbins who will roam the outfield. “I thought my high school career was over, but I got one more game and I’m pretty excited.”

According to the letter each player receives, players were chosen because coaches around the state were impressed with the skills displayed not only as a senior, but throughout the course of a high school career. Ollison, who has led the Versailles program for the past two years, said Dobbins is certainly no exception.

“Taylor is a wonderful baseball player and even better kid. The way he approaches the game is the way all coaches would like their players to approach it,” the skipper noted. “He is competitive, but humble. He has confidence in his abilities, but is quick to celebrate when a teammate succeeds as well. He is very deserving of this honor and any others that come his way in the future. We will definitely miss his presence in our program.”

At the same time, Dobbins said his selection would not have been possible without the time invested by Ollison, assistant Dusty Daniels and former head coach Broc Silvers.

“In my first two years Silvers brought a knowledge to the game I didn’t know and Ollison brought even more. Having two coaches broadened my knowledge and understanding,” the senior pointed out. “Ollison went in depth with fundamental things and helped my hitting get a lot better. As I got to know Daniels, he was the guy I went to when I was doing bad. With all the coaching I had, I learned so many different ways to do things.”

He implores returning Tigers to take advantage of their time at Versailles as well.

“It was awesome. We had some wonderful leaders and captains from my younger years and some of the greatest coaches around,” Dobbins said looking back on his time at Versailles. “Just show up to summer weights and other summer stuff because that is where the season is won as Coach Silvers would say.”

Dobbins also plays with a summer travel team and will have a weekend full of baseball with games from Thursday to Sunday, but he will get to put on the Versailles ball cap one more time when he takes the field for the Class 3 game at U.S. Baseball Stadium in Ozark on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“I’m pretty excited and it will be nice to be around a bunch of top guys in Missouri,” he said of the upcoming matchup. “I’m going to have some fun with it.”
