Versailles ends Tri-County Tourney with a win over California
Versailles faced California in the consolation finals of the Tri-County Conference Tournament on Thursday night at Osage and earned fifth place with a 98-92 win over the Pintos in a high-scoring shootout.
Versailles' Wyatt Espinosa led the Tigers with 29 points, Jonathon Geier dropped 28, Ayrton Gennetten added 13 and Coby Williams finished with 11.
“I was proud of our effort in this tournament. We did a really nice job of making adjustments and putting together a good week,” Versailles coach Jason Ollison said. “I hope we can use this as a springboard into conference season and keep the momentum going.”
Versailles improved to 7-4 and is scheduled to host Father Tolton on Tuesday at 5 p.m., before visiting Buffalo on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Eldon drops nail-biter to Warsaw
It came down to the final shot when Eldon met Warsaw in the seventh place game of the Tri-County Conference Tournament at Osage Thursday night.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the buzzer-beating basket belonged to the Wildcats in a 59-57 loss.
"Lots to learn from last night, both on the court and in life," Eldon coach Brandon Kliethermes said. "Sometimes you can do a lot of really good things and the ball still not bounce your way. I thought our guys played very hard and made some big plays late.
"We just need to learn to extend a lead and take it one possession at a time, especially in the fourth quarter of a close game. The (Matthew) Luebbert kid (Warsaw) is a heck of a player, that hit a heck of a shot, in a heck of a time."
Jordan Metz led the production of the Eldon offense with 20 points while Devin Degraffenreid finished his night with 19 points and six rebounds and Clayton Moore finished with 11.
Eldon (0-13) will have some time to get things back on track before the Mustangs visit Fulton on January 15 at 5 p.m.
