Mustangs take second place

The Lake area volleyball teams of Eldon, Versailles and School of the Osage were all in action on Saturday for the annual Versailles Invitational.

After three games of pool play concluded, Versailles bowed out with a two-set loss to Green Ridge in the quarterfinals (25-12, 29-27), Osage lost a three-set battle with Eldon in the semifinals and the Mustangs made their way to the championship game where they came up short against Tri-County Conference foe California in two sets by final scores of 25-17 and 25-19.

Eldon assistant Julliet Zumdome noted that Eldon may have been a little tired by the championship after playing six straight games over the course of eight hours, but the effort was not lacking.

“They (Eldon players) are warriors and decided it was time to warrior up before the Osage game. They said no matter what, they were playing in the championship game,” Zumdome noted. “We are so proud of their effort and dedication. They played fearless all day.”

Grace Baucom paced the Mustang attack in the championship game with 13 kills and went over 300 for the season with 306 to her name so far. Dakota Graham put up eight kills and Leah Stichler added 17 assists to keep Eldon on the offensive. Defensively, Camryn Mueller finished with six digs and Addie Davis added five respectively.

Versailles finished pool play with a win over Crystal City and ties with Eldon and Mid-Buchanan before the loss to Green Ridge. Coach Jessica Ollison said it was not a bad day for the Tigers.

“Pool play went fairly well for us. We would tend to come out very strong in the first set and then lose our intensity in the second,” she said. “Tournament play was the exact opposite as Green Ridge’s serving and offense got the best of our defense in the first set and we stepped up in the second and began anticipating better before losing a very tight set. Overall, I was proud of their effort.”

Bri Hendrix led the Tiger attack with 18 kills over the weekend while Brooke Edgar finished with 14. Taralee Edgar put up 33 assists and Hope Heimsoth put up six aces while Brooke had five and Hendrix had four.

On the defensive end, Carrie Hoffa had four blocks while Isabella Edgar and Hannah Whan each recorded three. Hendrix also posted 27 digs, Brooke had 25, Heimsoth finished with 24 and Taralee added 23 respectively.

Osage stats were not available at the time of press, but the Indians picked up wins over Southern Boone, Hallsville and Warsaw while tying Green Ridge.
