The runners of Camdenton began the 2017 campaign with a trip to the SWCCCA meet in Bolivar on Saturday.
The Lakers had just two returning lettermen from the 2016 season in Garrett Mason and Andrew DiBello who had run a high school 5k race before, but came away with some notable finishes overall.
Mason placed 12th in a tough Class 4 division with a time of 16:57 while Jake Thoenen took 28th at 17:30 and DiBello finished 44th at 18:19.
"Garrett and Andrew DiBello both had their best performances of their careers," Camdenton coach David Weber said. "I was really pleased that Garrett broke 17 minutes as that puts him in a pretty good spot early in the season. Andrew also improved his best time from last year by nearly 50 seconds and Jake, who is also a soccer player, had a really good race considering he only runs with us part time."
The girls’ team featured runners participating in their first high school race and came away with some strong times in the junior varsity race. Skyler Sweezor topped the field with a time of 21:56, Cambrie Kowal also medaled taking third at 23:47, Alicia Smythe earned 44th at 30:05, Autumn Davis finished 57th at 33:18 and Abbey Cordia took 61st at 34 minutes even.
"Skyler did a great job in winning the race and showed some good promise for the rest of the season," Weber said. "The other runners did a nice job in completing their races and now can expect to get better as the season progresses."
Camdenton will return to the course on September 11 with a trip to Lebanon.
