The Macks Creek Lady Pirates welcomed the Crocker Lady Lions to Macks Creek on Monday night. This one wasn't enough for seven, so the squads played two extra innings. At the end of the night it was the Lady Lions who emerged with an 8 - 5 victory.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Pirates mounted a come back bid to score two runs and force extra innings. Madeline Phillips lead off with a single to left and stole second. Hannah Roofener then delivered an RBI-triple to right field, just under the glove of the fielder. After a pop out to short, Lexi Mayer hit a ground ball to second, which bounced out of the fielder's glove and away from her, allowing Roofener to score and tie the game. The winning run was at third, but a groundout to short by Jesse Willis, which barely got her at first, ended the inning.
After a scoreless eighth, Crocker was able to take advantage of four Lady Pirate errors to plate three runs. Macks Creek attempted another comeback bid in their half of the inning. With one out, Mylee Hicks doubled to left, but was doubled-off at second base when Mayer's line drive was caught and Hicks was tagged, ending the game.
"This is a tough one to lose for us,” Macks Creek Coach Jason Trusty said. "But, we battled to the end and had opportunities to come out on top.
"Playing a game like this early in the season will only help us grow as a unit and make us better,” he added.
Shaylee Skinner suffered her first loss in relief of Lady Pirates' started Bethany Schmidt. Skinner worked the final three frames, allowing three unearned runs on one hit while striking out one. Schmidt started and tossed the first six innings. She allowed five runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out six, walking two, and hitting three batters.
Offensively, Shelby Willis, Phillips, and Roofener each banged out two hits apiece for the Lady Pirates. Shelby collected two singles and a run scored, Phillips also had two singles to go along with a walk and three runs scored, and Roofener singled, tripled in a run, scored and walked. Hicks doubled, Mayer singled in a run and reached on an error, Kali Eidson walked twice, and Kenzie Hicks reached on an error.
Macks Creek drops to 2-2 with the loss. They took on Versailles Tuesday and will host Springfield Central on Thursday at 5 p.m.
