It’s fall shoreline cleanup time again and a mass effort is underway to protect the beauty of Lake of the Ozarks.
Bryan Vance, field coordinator with shoreline management, said he expects an estimated 300 volunteers this year.
“If not for the volunteers at the lake, there would be trash floating around everywhere, which would detract from the lake’s beauty,” he said.
During the spring cleanup, Vance said 864 volunteers showed up, relieving the lake of more than 3,000 cubic yards of trash, a record for spring totals.
“The majority of what we remove is boat dock foam,” he said. “We also see a lot of soda bottles, beer cans and other trash like that.”
According to their Web site, AmerenUe banned any new installation of non-encapsulated dock foam in 1995 and founded the Adopt-the-Shoreline program in 1992 to help protect the miles of shoreline at the lake.
Fall shoreline cleanup started Sept. 14 and should end Nov. 1.
