THE ISSUE Litterbugs trash scenic view at Lover’s Leap
OUR VIEW Litterbugs hurt our area, economy and way of life
There is a property owner here at the lake who is gracious enough to allow people onto her undeveloped land.
The site offers a breathtaking view of Lake of the Ozarks at the 31.5-mile marker.
It’s historic name is a romantic one given to such places around the country.
Lover’s Leap offers a commanding view of both the Ozark hills and Lake of the Ozarks.
Pat Cromby and her family have owned Lover’s Leap for many years. She told our reporter she has no problem with letting people hike from the road to the bluff to see the stunning view from the bluff that rises about 200 feet above the lake.
Yet the inconsideration of a few undisciplined rogues may ruin it for all of us. The property owner, who no longer lives at the lake, cannot keep the trash left behind by visitors picked up, she says.
She should not have to.
Period.
Trash left behind ranges from partiers hiding out from law enforcement to derelict dock foam haulers who dumped loads down the bluff rather than pay to have it properly disposed of.
Both of the acts disgrace the lake area, it’s good full-time residents and visitors alike. They tarnish our reputation, and they are anything but limited to this spot.
Littering is a crime that needs stricter penalties and tougher enforcement across our area, state and nation.
Law enforcement officers should make their presence felt in this area. While no one expects them to stake out the property 24/7, a few more drive bys and walk throughs ought to make the risk of getting caught a little more prominent in the minds of litterbugs and other law breakers.
“It’s such a beautiful spot and it would really make a beautiful park area,” Cromby told our reporter.
Perhaps that statement opens the door to the county, a service organization or a state agency to consider developing the area as a public access for future generations.
That would be an excellent opportunity to take advantage of.
