THE ISSUE Gov. Nixon proposed merging the highway and water patrols
OUR VIEW Many questions need to be answered first
Be sure to look for our E-Board's take on the merger proposal in this spot Saturday morning.
Sometimes we may wonder why every time there is a funding shortfall, budget crunch or economic squeeze, the seemingly first “victim” is alway education.
There’s a very specific – if often unspoken – reason for this political maneuver.
Some day, the annual Shoreline Cleanup will no longer be necessary.
Last year, volunteers cleaned up a staggering 266 tons, or nearly 4,000 cubic yards of debris, most of it old foam.
I think we’ve run enough photos over the years of volunteers alongside huge piles of foam. I’d really like to run a photo someday soon that shows cleanup volunteers who only were able to collect a small bag of litter.
There is very little understanding of what the Sunshine Law is among some members of the Lake Ozark Board
No Shakespearean play this, just Lake Ozark theater.
NOW, voices of reason must be heard over the howling curs - the city faces too many serious challenges to disintegrate.

We don’t need a negative designation for our lake, we need the system to work correctly to ensure quality water
That they were attempting to bring in a salvage yard is not the critical issue here – they were asking for favoritism, plain and simple – and that is something no government entity or the residents it serves can tolerate. The commission and board were right in adopting P&Z now.

WHAT I THINK The board still plans to spend money to study a wall?
Cheers to volunteers; auction bidders; stiff sentences; and MoDOT. Jeers to shoplifter from St. Louis
Presidents Bush and Obama and the United States Congress gave away billions upon billions of dollars to bailout U.S automakers General Motors and Chrysler during the last year.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for a Versailles Chevy dealer who announced Monday he could take no more and would be forced to close his doors.
Every few years or so, someone will object to seasonal Christmas holiday decorations on the Camden County Courthouse lawn.
They always site some twisted reference to the separation of church and state from the U. S. Constitution. The Constitution actually makes no reference of any kind to or uses the word “separation”.
It’s been said desperate times call for desperate measures. Combine that with ‘Live by the sword, die by the sword’ and substitute sales taxes for the sharp-edged instrument of warfare and you’ll understand where Camden County finances are.
For better than a decade, Camden County residents and their elected governance have struggled with developing a master plan to organize and legislate unfettered growth in unincorporated areas of the county that surround Lake of the Ozarks.
In 2008, the county planning department set about revising the plan that was finally put in place 5 years ago.
The result will be presented to the public at an open house Tuesday evening.
You see them in cars ahead of you and alongside you all the time. Nearly all of us have some bad driving habits we’ve developed over time. Experts tell us to not drink beverages, eat, light cigarettes, put on makeup, fix our hair, adjust a tie or talk on a cell phone. But some us are guilty of at least one of those sins, and some of multiple offenses.
Gov. Nixon vows Lake of the Ozarks will be cleaner when he leaves office through tough enforcement of water quality laws
The city of Osage Beach has been a leader in the lake area in a number of ways. We think you should plan to stop by the city’s public forum on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Osage Beach City Hall.
The good news is that from here on out, each year there should be less and less of the stuff. The bad news is there is still a need for shoreline cleanups because the old dock floatation foam is still out there.
As a society, we ask the men and women who don a police uniform to face the potential risk of putting their lives on the line every single day they report to work. The “thin blue line” is the barrier between an orderly, peaceful society and the anarchy of rule of the jungle.
Isn’t life ironic sometimes? In the same week that a story about Osage Beach repealing an ordinance banning military funeral protests because of an appellate court ruling, the Wounded Warriors unit from Ft. Leonard Wood near Waynesville will be visiting the lake on the anniversary of 9/11.
It’s been one week since I penned a jeer to speed trap cops. I haven’t received any comments vie e-mail or phone, but the online reader comments topped more than a dozen.
The jeer simply stated cops parked along the road clocking radar are not driving our roads and being seen, which is the top deterrent to crimes like burglary.
