83, WWII Navy vet worked as a mail handler for the Kansas City Terminal Railway


Gilbert A. Jones, 83, of Roach, passed away Oct. 24, 2009.  Gilbert was born Feb. 13, 1926, in DeKalb, Mo., to Johnny Bryan and Mamie Agnes Jones. 
He graduated from Ruhl Hartman in South Kansas City, Mo., and attended college at Marysville before joining the U.S. Navy at the end of WWII. 
On Feb. 25, 1950, Gilbert married Betty Yates. 
Gilbert worked as a mail handler for the Kansas City Terminal Railway until his retirement in 1989.  After retiring, Gilbert and Betty moved from Peculiar, Mo., to Roach,  where they have lived for the last 20 years.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty R. Jones of the home; daughter Pam Harper and her husband Clint; daughter Sherri Jones and her friend Rick Cox; grandchildren Shelley and Amber Jones, Shannon Fortenberry, Andy Harper and Jennifer Sullins; 7 great grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Baker and Paulina Tervol; and one brother Virgil Jones.
 Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd; burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
