Some of John’s favorite passions included riding his Harley-Davidson motor cycle, boating, fishing and watching sports especially Jayhawk basketball. John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patricia Gilbertson.

John Henry Gilbertson, 69, Sunrise Beach, passed away surrounded by family on February 5 at his daughter’s home in Kearney, MO. Memorial services are 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 8th at the McGilley Antioch Chapel where a visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Contributions are suggested to NorthCare Hospice.

John was born December 17, 1947 to Thomas and Gertrude Gilbertson, Sr. in Kansas City, KS. He was a 1969 graduate of the University of Kansas and remained a loyal Jayhawk fan. While in college he served in the Kansas National Guard.

Upon graduation John began his career with Burlington-Northern Railroad. He left after a short time to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer working for the Kansas City MO Police Department for three years. Later, he returned to BNSF where he was employed for 18 years before retiring in 2008.

Survivors include 5 children: Amanda (Jeremy) Riddle; Jason (Andrea) Gilbertson; Rebecca McDonald; Rachel Perez; and Renee (Dan) Smith; 2 brothers Thomas (Debbie) Gilbertson, Jr.; and Ray (Liz) Gilbertson; sister Kathy (Lester) Nichols; and 12 grandchildren.
