The Clean Water Festival at Captain Ron's Bar & Grill during the new 2 Dam Days event this weekend is more than just a party.
The Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance (LOWA) will be on hand with Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists of the area providing information on how individual homeowners can help maintain and improve the water quality of Lake of the Ozarks.
According to LOWA director Donna Swall, Master Gardeners can help homeowners design a beautiful yard that also helps keep storm water out of the lake.
"The number one pollutant is actually soil. It becomes a suspended solid, providing a platform for bacteria to grow. That's how we get these high E. coli numbers," Swall said.
Designing your lakefront yard to resist erosion helps keep the soil on the bank and out of the water.
At the LOWA booth during the all-day fest, which starts at 10 a.m., there will also be information and discussion about the health of the lake as it is today and future plans on maintaining good water quality as the population in the region increases.
The Clean Water Fest and entire 2 Dam Days event is not a fundraiser for LOWA, Swall said, but a chance to promote a clean and healthy lake to the nation.
2 Dam Days
This event will begin Saturday with the start of a 91-mile marathon paddle race for kayaks and canoes, taking off from Drake Harbor in Warsaw.
The first day of this two-day event will end at Captain Ron's Bar & Grill Saturday night.
A Just For Fun paddle will also end its day at this lakefront entertainment complex. Starting at Halfway Inn, this one-day race will encompass 14 miles. Paddlers will be entered into a drawing for a free kayak donated by Dan Dougan of Oz Cycles and Kayaks. Trophies will also be awarded for first, second and third places.
On the second day, marathon paddlers will travel from Captain Ron's to Iguana Watersports near Bagnell Dam.
On Sunday when the race is complete, an awards ceremony will be held on the Bagnell Dam Strip. There will be more than $13,500 in prize money given away. With five divisions, there will be 31 winners. One team will also be taking home the Top Paddle Award.
