Cross country freshman Faith Scheidemantle made history over the weekend by becoming the first female at Camdenton High School to qualify for the Class 4 state meet. Scheidemantle placed 18th (19:53.04) in Saturday's Class 4, Sectional 3 meet at Ha Ha Tonka State Park.
Coach David Weber said Scheidemantle achieved her preseason goal.
"Before entering the season her goal was to make it to state and to set a school record," he said. "For a freshman runner to come in and do that her first year is quite the accomplishment. I attribute the majority of her success to her summer conditioning and her willingness to go hard in every race. She really puts it all on the line when racing."
Both CHS groups finished last in the team standings but Weber said the Lady Lakers "as a whole ran really well by having a team average of under 22 minutes", a first for the squad.
Laura Spraggins, Dana Goodwin, Elvy Ramirez and Ivy McDermott were in the Lady Lakers' top five.
Connor Brady overcame a bit of pain to finish first for the CHS boys' team. J. J. Ryan, Logan Whittmore, Jacob Rabenold and Kemper Virtue rounded out the top five for the Lakers.
"Connor was suffering from blisters the entire race but had a gutsy performance none the less," Weber said.
Weber is excited for 2012 after seeing both CHS teams qualify for sectionals for the first time in program history this season.
"Although we could have finished a little better as a team, I'm really excited about the potential for next year as we lose just one boy and one girl to graduation," he said.
Scheidemantle will run in the girls' Class 4 meet on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.
