Quilting never gets boring for Sue Purdon, pictured with her long arm quilting maching. It’s always about the next “what if.”

When Sue Purdon moved to Alaska in 1989 for husband Rick’s duty assignment in the Air Force, she decided to give quilting a try. She has now crafted more than 100 of her own quilts in addition to working on the projects of countless others. A couple of years ago, with several “UFOs” (unfinished objects) or  unquilted pieced tops around the house, she decided to purchase a long arm quilting machine. Now able to quilt more efficiently, she takes on more and always has several projects in the works. A long time crafter in general, it is in quilting that she has found her artistic medium of choice, enjoying the combination of detail and creativity.

Where do you find inspiration?
You find images in magazines, objects. It’s everywhere. I also like to make my own imprint on patterns by altering the colors or skewing the design slightly. It’s the great what-if.

Do you have favorite patterns or colors?
Right now, I’m really into circles. I like the dynamism.

Why do you enjoy quilting?
There’s always such neat things you can do with fabric. It’s like an artist with paint. It becomes your palette.
