With a thriving population of retirees in Lake of the Ozarks, the Golden Age Activity Center is tossing out the stereotype of the decrepit elderly. They definitely aren't. It's a fun and active place to be.

The center is bustling with activities - and not just for those over 55. Between dances, movie nights, music lessons and computer classes, the center opens its doors for a number of activities.

It's the friendships that are formed that keeps people coming back.

Programs Chair Suzi Layden said she started going to the center to participate in one of the dancing classes. She kept going back because of the camaraderie, liveliness and diversity of the center's members.

The Golden Age Activity Center is not for the fuddy-duddy, Layden said.

There's always something going on, an event that's being planned, Layden said.

Past special events include the Little Black Dress for the Big Black Parking Lot, a fundraiser that brought in more than $4,000 to asphalt the center's parking lot. There was also April Showers for Shoes that raised money for Special Olympics Missouri, Red Hatters luncheon and a High Tea celebrating the royal wedding.

Future gatherings include a rummage sale in September and a flea market with pony rides in August.

The center's monthly spaghetti dinner, held on the second Saturday of the month, always draws a crowd. For $7 a plate for an adult ($3.50 for children), you can load up on spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, salad, garlic bread and dessert.

Monthly programs are for those 55 years and older, plus their guests. Special events are open to all ages of the public.

The non-profit center is run by volunteers and funded through donations and money raised from various events.
