On Wednesday night, freezing drizzle made travel treacherous for drivers in Miller and Morgan counties. Highway 5 from Laurie to Versailles was slow-going on Wednesday night, especially the section of highway north of Gravois Mills.
The Morgan County Sheriff's Department reported several weather-related incidents overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
Patrol Supervisor Sgt. Mike Nienhuis reported a total of 23 motor vehicle accidents and stranded motorist calls from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. They were almost all weather-related, he said, and scattered throughout the county.
James Hofmann, 71, of Columbia sustained serious injuries in a car accident on Highway 52 on Wednesday evening. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Hofmann was driving eastbound in a 2007 Ford. The vehicle traveled off the westbound side of the roadway and entered a concrete culvert, where it overturned.
The crash occurred at 5:45 p.m. between Versailles and Barnett, just east of the west junction of Big Rock Road. Hofmann was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious injuries. he was taken by ambulance to Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach.
MoDOT also had trucks working on Highway 54 from Lake Ozark to Jefferson City. Sections of Highways 17 and 52 in Miller County also proved treacherous, which led to more than 20 ice-related accidents on Wednesday night.
School district officials in Eldon and Versailles cancelled classes and activities on Thursday, as did school districts in smaller communities like Stover, Tipton, St. Elizabeth and Eugene.
By Thursday afternoon, The Missouri Department of Transportation indicated that most of the highways in the tri-county area were mostly clear of ice.
