More than 100 people stood with shocked and sullen looks on their faces and watched from across East Valley Drive as the Woodland Scenics building burned Thursday afternoon.

Woodland Scenics is considered a leader in manufacturing model railroad scenery and other hobby supplies. When fire broke out in its Linn Creek manufacturing site and store, it spread quickly.

"What this building that you see burning houses is a lot of foam and very combustable products. When we got on the scene we had heavy black smoke, had heavy flame," Osage Beach Fire Chief Jeff Dorhauer said.

According to Linn Creek Chief of Police Trevor Dowdney, the company had a good evacuation plan and all of its employees escaped the building without being injured by fire.

"Our main concern is, obviously, everyone is out and everyone is safe, the residents behind the facilities as well," Dowdney said.

Smoke from the fire guided by a slight southwest wind filled an adjacent neighborhood. Most of the residents left their homes because of the smoke and joined a gallery of Woodland Scenics employees who watched the fire from a safe distance. Firefighters from four fire protection districts went to work trying to protect all of the buildings that surround Woodland Scenics.

"We more or less had to write this building off and do what we could just to protect what wasn't burnt," Dorhauer said at the scene.

Firefighters were on the scene for at least six hours. In fighting the fire, they exhausted the Linn Creek water supply. The city is under a boil order until further notice.

"The city of Linn Creek is effectively out of water right now. We're doing tanker shuttles," Dorhauer said.

Firetrucks from at least five surrounding fire protection districts shuttled in water from Camdenton to the scene after Linn Creek's water supply (approximately 80,000 gal.) ran out. The Osage Beach Fire Protection District called for mutual aid from at least eight surrounding fire districts because of the size of the fire. Firefighters and trucks from Camdenton, Mid-County, Lake Ozark, Sunrise Beach and Nortwest fire departments all assisted at the scene.

The Linn Creek Police Department and Camden County Sheriff's Office shut down all of the surrounding streets in Linn Creek's downtown area.
