An 86-year-old woman who suffered burns in an early morning fire has died more than a month after the accidental fire destroyed the home.
Violet Marie Simpson passed away late last week at Lake Regional Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.
Personnel from the Mid-County Fire Protection District were called to the home off Sunny Slope Road at 3:45 a.m. Dec. 28.
When they arrived, the single story home was fully engulfed and the fire started to spread to the adjacent garage.
The two people inside had escaped and fled to a neighbor’s house to call for help.
When firefighters arrived, they were being helped by deputies from the Camden County Sheriff’s Department.
Simpson was burned and suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment. She was later transferred to University Hospital in Columbia, Mo. with serious injures.
The other person was admitted to Lake Regional Hospital with smoke inhalation.
The fire was ruled accidental. It started in the wall of the living room due to an electrical failure.
