One of the few items on the Nov. 3 election ballot in Morgan County will be a 1/2-cent capital improvement sales tax for the village of Gravois Mills.
While trustees had previously discussed using it to help citizens with sewer bills from the Gravois Arm Sewer District (GASD), that may or may not be how the proposed revenue would be utilized, according to secretary/treasurer John Brooks.
“We’ve been looking at a lot of things,” he said. “Anything related to utilities, parks. The town doesn’t have much in the way of a capital improvement budget, so there’s really no point in talking right now without any money. We need the public’s support, then we can move forward with different ideas. We can talk about allocation and projects.”
Because sewer has been a hot topic for the board recently, Brooks said it would definitely, however, be on the list to be discussed.
In the past, the board of trustees has criticized the GASD for its billing rates and service.
The village has a one-cent sales tax in place now. Brooks estimated that the revenue from the proposed 1/2-cent sales tax would be about $1,500-$1,600 per month, or $18,000-$19,200 a year.
