A 53-year-old man died after being thrown overboard when the boat he was in hit two large wakes.
William C. Ray, a 53-year-old man from Newcastle, Okla., died late Thursday morning at Lake Regional Health System after being involved in the boating accident earlier that morning. Ray’s death has been ruled a drowning. It is the first drowning of 2011 reported on Lake of the Ozarks.
Ray was a passenger in a 2001 18-foot Basstracker boat when the boat struck two cruiser wakes near the 17 mile marker around 9:30 a.m. The boat tipped, causing both Ray and driver Scott A. Kimble, 39, of Buhler, Kan., to fall overboard. Ray and Kimble tried to swim for shore, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division’s report, however, Ray was unable to make it to a nearby dock.
The Lake Ozark Fire Protection District’s fire boat arrived at the scene and retrieved Ray from the water.
The report does not indicate his condition at the time he was pulled from the water. Ray was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. by doctors at Lake Regional Health System. His death was ruled a drowning.
Kimble did not sustain any injuries.
Neither men were wearing a life jacket.
