A woman arrested after her boyfriend was found dead of a gunshot wound in Versailles has been convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Angela Keefe, 31, of Versailles was not arrested in the death of Justin Wittrock on August 12, 2018, reported as a suicide. During the death investigation, Keefe admitted to using one of two guns found at the residence days prior to his death though she is a felon and cannot legally use or be around firearms. She told investigators that she had gotten the Ruger pistol found near Wittrock’s body and had given it to him because she thought she had heard an intruder at their home a few days earlier. A Stevens .22 caliber rifle was also located in their home.

Keefe said Wittrock owned both weapons though she had told him she could not have guns in the house.

In 2010, Keefe had been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide in Lake County, Illinois.

After moving to Morgan County, she pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making a false report to police in 2017 and received probation. She also pled guilty to felony second degree domestic assault in 2014 and received a suspended execution of sentence.

On Oct. 5, 2018, Keefe was sentenced to 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on the August 12, 2018 weapon charge. Still on probation from the domestic assault, Keefe’s probation was revoked and was sentenced to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on that charge. Under Missouri Revised Statute 559.115, Keefe received preference for the 120-day Institutional Treatment Center program, which provides inmates with education focusing on life skills and counseling and can allow for probation.
