According to Osage Beach Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Dorhauer, several historical fires have occurred on October 8th, 1871.

October 7-13th will mark the 97th Anniversary of National Fire Prevention Week in the United States. There is a reason that the week containing October 9th is always when Fire Prevention Week is recognized.

According to Osage Beach Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Dorhauer, several historical fires have occurred on October 8th, 1871.

The Great Chicago Fire, 300 hundred died

The Peshtigo Fire, between 1,500-2,500 died

Port Huron Fire, over 200 died

However it was the Great Chicago Fire for which President Calvin Coolidge, in 1922, proclaimed that the week in which October 9th falls to be in commemoration and named Fire Prevention Week, Dorhauer said.

The overall theme of National Fire Prevention Week changes each year and in 2018 the theme is:

LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN.

Be aware.

Fire can happen anywhere.

•Look for places fire can start.

•Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm.

•Learn two ways out of each room.

From NFPA:

This year's Fire Prevention Week messages point to the essentials of home fire safety.

Looking for potential fire hazards in the home, making sure your smoke alarms are working properly, and having a home escape plan that everyone has practiced – these actions can dramatically reduce the loss from home fires, people don't think they could have a fire, despite the fact that home is the place they're at greatest risk -- four out of five U.S. fire deaths occur in homes.

The skirmish helped set the scene for the actual battle which took place along the Wet Auglaize in the area known as Shanghai or Henrytown, but also as Monday’s Hollow after the pioneer family of Monday who homesteaded the land. This name would be the one that stuck with the name of the battle.

While the Confederate foray drew off part of the cavalry, it got the federal troops’ wind up, and they sent for reinforcements.

According to the Camden County Historical Society, the real battle came as federal troops came suddenly upon a rebel outpost. Capturing the guard, the federal soldiers compelled information from him. It was revealed that a Confederate force was lying in wait nearby in hopes of ambushing the Union troops.

Just like that, the fates reversed.

Union troops turned the tables and successfully ambushed the Confederate soldiers.
